Stellar pulsations excited by a scattered mass

چکیده
We compute the energy spectra of the gravitational signals emitted when a mass m0 is scattered by the gravitational field of a star of mass M >> m0. We show that, unlike black holes in similar processes, the quasi-normal modes of the star are excited, and that the amount of energy emitted in these modes depends on how close the exciting mass can get to the star. A search for pulsations among low-mass DAO white dwarfs
We performed a search for periodic light variations among low-mass DAO white dwarfs. These objects have theoretically been predicted to exhibit low-order g-mode pulsations due to a potent mechanism in hydrogen-burning shells according to model calculations of Charpinet et al. (1997). No pulsations were detected in any of our nine candidate stars. This can be attributed to the very narrow instab...
متن کاملPeriod change and δ Scuti pulsations of eclipsing binary star RZ Cassiopiae
RZ Cas is an Algol-type partial eclipsing binary, the secondary component of which has filled its Roche lobe. Its visual magnitude is 6.18 and its period is 1.195 days. The most important characteristics of RZ Cas are period change (due to mass transfer) and anomalies in the primary minimum of its light curve (due to δ Scuti pulsations). In this paper, light curves of RZ Cas are obtained using ...
متن کاملThe effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملThe puzzling new class of variable stars in NGC 3766 : old friend pulsators?
Context. The recent variability survey of the NGC 3766 cluster revealed a considerable number of periodic variable stars in a region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram where no pulsations were expected. This region lies between the instability strips of the δ Scuti and slowly pulsating B (SPB) stars. Moreover, the periods of the new phenomenon, P∼0.1–0.7 d, do not allow us to associate it a pri...
متن کاملAmplitudes of stochastically excited oscillations in main-sequence stars
We present estimates of the amplitudes of intrinsically stable stochastically excited radial oscillations in stars near the main sequence. The amplitudes are determined by the balance between acoustical energy generation by turbulent convection (the Lighthill mechanism) and linear damping. Convection is treated with a time-dependent, nonlocal, mixing-length model, which includes both convective...
